Because mini LED is superior to OLED.

Not sure why your logic assumes OLED is better. Kuo has said OLED will be used in entry-level and mid-range iPad Air next year.
So why is OLED in the most expensive (actually in all...) iPhones when it's not that good? Can't possibly convince me that Mini-LED only works at 12.9" sizes and higher. Yield goes the other way around.

I wonder if it's time for Apple to make their own displays (with black jack and etc...)

Mini LED is more difficult to manufacture as it becomes smaller.

There are challenges in making small LEDs light up. Everyone can make a mini LED TV or notebook. The difficulty is shrinking LED so it still maintains luminosity while being tiny.

how is mini LED better than OLED? OLED can turn light off per pixel, so it’s inherently better at accurate blacks (miniLED pixels have to share backlighting, so if some are supposed to be black and others are not, the device has to compromise, which causes halos or other artifacts). OLED has better viewing angles. MiniLED more or less wins only for absolute brightness and lack of burn in, unless i’m forgetting something.

Mini LED can more easily achieve full color gamut (Rec. 2020) compared to OLED. It's the next step after DCI-P3. Mini LED also offers higher luminance without the lifetime tradeoffs compared to OLED. All other things are roughly equal, including power consumption.

There seems to be this whole religion on "true blacks" offered by OLED. If you ask what creative professionals actually want, that's not high on their list. Wide color gamut and luminance is.

Every single time MacRumors posts an article about iPad Pro and MacBook Pro moving to mini LED, a number of posters seem genuinely surprised with that news. "Why would iPad Pro get mini LED while iPad Air gets OLED? OLED is clearly better than mini LED, right!?" If it wasn't obvious with the XDR, it should be abundantly clear by now. Mini LED offers more advantages compared to OLED.

I have the 2018 11" Pro and I've been considering getting the larger model. The more I read, the more this seems like a minor refresh (mini-LED or no mini-LED). I may opt 2020 model if the specs changes are marginal.

and yet a lot of ”creative professionals” complain about apple’s monitor and backlight blooming.

It depends on who you ask. The CCP is trying to flood the market with cheap mini-LEDs while the South Koreans are pushing OLED. Even Samsung is partnering with LG on OLED TVs to counter. There are also fanboys that claim Apple mini-LED is the holy grail and downplay OLED until Apple does it like with iPhones. Reality is both display technology have pros and cons. If you want best image quality with deep black but supposedly shorter life go OLED or good enough image quality with greyish black but longer life then go mini-LED.

This is one tech I will wait for the reviews on. With OLED you get per pixel lighting, with mini-LED you don't, and if we're talking about areas on a high DPI screen where light and dark areas meet (like white text on a black background) you're going to get light-bloom, the only question is how bad. Will Apple sacrifice brightness to maintain black levels or crush blacks to maintain brightness, only time will tell. I have a Samsung Full Array Local Dimming QLED TV and while 95% of the time it's gorgeous, give it end credits or an on-screen menu and it's just a mess of bloom and uneven lighting.

I know with computer displays burn in can be a real concern with OLED, but as of yet my 2.5 year old Galaxy Tab S4 is not showing any signs of burn in although I use it every day as a "rough and ready" tablet (to keep my iPad nice).

Second half of April..this means this week we will get or should get the invitation for the digital event..

MiniLED would be a lot worse for brightness uniformity than OLED - haloing will be quite annoying once you notice it for the first time.
That depends on how many dimming zones Apple uses. Having a 4000 FALD is going to be very different to a 200 FALD. PWM is another OLED downfall for some users. I’m very interested in Apples requested specification for MiniLED.

I may upgrade to it but would want more than just mini led display will see what else it has.

why not OLED? Samsung has large OLED tablets. Better than mini LED will ever be
(don't start about burn in, your iphone doesn't have burn in either)

My guess is: money.

MiniLED is still an LCD but with more localized dimming, no matter how much it is pushed as revolutionary it is no where near OLED.

OLED screens are about twice as expensive as LCD (based on a report from a Chinese manufacturer), plus they are more difficult to make and for Samsung to produce these screens for Apple a good number of units must be secured, otherwise there is a penalty.

iPhones sell by the millions and still Apple has often had to pay Samsung a penalty for not purchasing enough OLED displays. I guess this is why we still don’t have OLED iPads.

All this OLED vs mini LED talk. I still think that with any mobile device, mini LED is superior. What matters is brightness. We have all experienced the annoyance of trying to use our phones in bright sunshine. “True blacks” are simply not as important as brightness, wide color gamut, lack of burn-in issues, etc... Apple would probably make iPhones mini LED too if they could.

I just hope they don't use this as an opportunity to raise prices. I have been on the fence forever but didn't want to spend full price on 2020 (hardly any discounts where I live). I am now finally willing to swallow the cost of a brand new 12.9. From past experience, that's typically when Apple decides to add $200-300 🤣 so sorry everyone if this happens because of me 😅!

I am so hyped for this iPad! This will be my first major Apple purchase since my 2013 retina (i'm excluding iPhones in here). I have a feeling if we want one we're going to have to be quick! Fingers crossed

I have never been a fan of tablets and even though I own a 2018 11" iPad Pro this is still a cautionary decision and waste of money imho. I am also still hesitant to take the plunge on buying the new Mac mini and or the new or upcoming rumored MBP due to the M1 chip and the Motherboard frying issue. Personally and I repeat "personally" I will always wait at least one year before making a new apple hardware purchase and or OS upgrades. People naturally will try their best to justify their purchase but ive read one too many horror stories about the handicaps from credible sources. Regardless im still optimistic that Apple will sort things out...just not straight out of the gate unfortunately. So if there really are supply issues that just might be a good thing.

I sold my ipad pro 11' (2018) first week of March to get a good price..... still waiting on this damn 12.9 Ipad pro.

Few days ago got a crazy 40% discount on the tab s7+ which is now on my desk waiting for me to decide if I'm gonna keep it.....
Apple better give a releasedate soon because I'm about to unbox it 😐
