They're claiming a new driver design and "the best ANC we've ever made" in their marketing material. Will try to get a pair on lunch and do A/B testing.
I think “we” on that quote might refer to Beats specifically and not Apple in general.

Still rocking my PBB(1) so I’ll grab these when those bite the dust and these go on sale.

Bummer! It should default to the ear. I suspect readings from the ear canal will be much more precise in high intencity. Had to pair with an H10 due to its inconsistent readings.
I would have thought the opposite, assuming that earwax would degrade the optical signal and strong ambient light might make it through the pinnae, but it sounds like these are not issues. I am surprised that Apple defaults to one device rather than choosing the device with the highest signal-to-noise ratio in tracking the heartbeat, but I am no engineer. Indeed combining the signals might improve accuracy...

I have to imagine they are, given the over-ear hook
Definitely. I have run literally thousands of miles with the first version of the Powerbeats Pro (two sets due to the known battery issues) and they stay put very well. If you have small ear canals, the APP2 will not stay in regardless of the ear adapter size. Have really been looking forward to these...

Does anyone know - if you’re already working out with an Apple Watch, does that make the HR sensor on these irrelevant?

What a bummer, I know for my plyo and HIIT workouts my watch can struggle keeping my heart rate tracked with all the movement. Was hoping they could work together to provide continuous metrics.

No ANT+ for heart rate?

Meh.

Would be a killer feature, considering ANT+ draws almost no power to be always-on. And it kinda standard for fitness equipment and devices, not Bluetooth.

Liking quick sand and hyper purple but own pro 2 so maybe in a year or wait for Powerbeats Pro 3 in future.

I remember watching a Garmin engineer talking about wrist readings. According to him, the wrist was one of the worst places on the body to read HR - but they “made it work” because everyone wears watches. I imagine you’d have to have quite the build up of ear wax for it to hinder a reading. It should, however, as you write be able to work in tandem. I have my old trustee Beats pro for work outs and 1. gen Airpods pro. I’m keeping them for as long as they’ll sing me the songs I ask them to. :)

You're right. The phrasing was something like "these are the first powerbeats with ANC. In fact, it's the best ANC we've ever made".

They do mention this dual-sided driver tech that wasn't on the APP2. Very compelling indeed.

Would be amazing to see a comparison chart with AirPods Pro 2. Is there things that either do that other can’t.

I'm wondering if the Health app would record readings from both watch and earbuds, the way it does for steps.

With steps, both iPhone and watch sends step data to the Health app. The Health app prioritizes data from the watch when it receives data from both devices at the same time, but if, for instance, you take off the watch and walk around with just your iPhone, it will use the data from the iPhone to increment your daily step count.

You can also manually change which device has priority.

If heart rate works the same way, Health app would smoothly switch to using heart rate data from the earbuds whenever the watch fails to register heart rate.

Hoping this is the case -- we'll have to wait for user reports once people get their hands on these.

New and updated design, but audio quality is nit as good as years old AirPod Pro 2’s is a major bummer.

Not sure if you get lossless to iPhones/iPads either.

Great colors!

I run a lot and now with the weight reduction and slimmer hook, these look like a winner for walking/running.

Cant wait to see what is refined in the AirPod pro 3’s!!

So Apple has juste released all new earbuds without the Hearing Test ?
