I'm not so sure. People might need the port when on the go (e.g. you're in a plane and you want to give a boost to your AirPods. Apple also needs the port for diagnostic purposes, to see if there is anything wrong with the earbuds hardware

It's rare for people to run out of juice in the case IMO.

Apple Watch has a hidden port for diagnostic purposes. Seems to work out fine.

It is not like we suddenly won’t be able to use billions of perfectly functioning cables with their respective devices. Sooner or later those Lightening cables will wear out and you can then switch over, no major rush.
Switching over to portless for iPhone and AirPods makes more sense than switching to USB-C temporarily before going portless.

thanks EU for this environmental disaster. could have kept using billions of perfectly functioning lightning cables but nope.

it's clear EU has no idea what they're doing. look at the annoying cookie popups for further proof. anyone who thinks otherwise are in absolute denial.
That doesn't happen with other phone/devices manufacturers. You know why? Because none use proprietary port, they all go for the standard USBs.

Apple designed this port and introduced it in 2012, by that time USB C (2014) didn't exist yet so you can argue it was a better option than mini/micro USB. BUT, it only reaches USB 2.0 transfer speeds (protocol from 2000) even when USB 3.0 was introduced 4 years prior to lighting port, plenty of time to use it in their design. And they could've ditched the lighting in 2015 for USB C (when they introduced their first USB C Mac), but they chose to keep using an outdated port and standard for 11 years, to keep making proprietary cables and accessories by millions to keep milking customers with their cables and licenses for cable manufacturers. Just because money.

So don't come now like EU is the problem with e-waste and environment, when it's Apple greed for money the cause. But hey they now use recycled aluminum and put some solar panels in their camps so they are super green!

I’m sure the EU already have a recycling plan in place across all member countries to deal with the discarded cables (since the idea WAS environment related). I’m not in the EU, but I assume their social media messaging campaign must be wide reaching!

If recycling lightning and USB-C costs the environment nothing, then choosing a port to standardize makes no difference to the environment.

I don’t wanna carry 2 cables. Will apple continue selling lightning AirPods? Otherwise I will go back to earpods. No usb-c for me as long as I have my 14 PM and I keep my devices for years.

Those billions of perfectly functioning Lightning cables can keep charging the billion perfectly functioning Lightning devices that also still exist.

And those billions can continue to charge future lightning devices, making the switch to USB-C pointless since things will eventually go portless anyways.

My heart goes out to all of those old yellow fraying lighting cables that will perish..

Uh oh

People have already called you out on this nonsense several times before yet you keep spewing it. All those perfectly functioning lightning cables will still be needed for all the perfecty functioning iPhones prior to the 15 series. Nothing changes about that just because a new phone is released that uses a different cable. There is nothing environmentally disastrous about it. Is this too hard for you to understand? Seriously 😂
If it's still going to be used for the years to come, it would be pointless to create a sudden demand for billions of new USB-C cables for the next 5 years until the iPhone goes portless.

You failed to understand that point, seriously. No wonder I have to repeat myself 😂

Don't see the relevance.

1st gen iPad Pros had lightning ports transferring at USB 3.0 speeds actually. If lightning speed was essential for iPhones, Apple would have brought it over and updated the cables. But you know why they didn't? Because that would create a disaster for people who have 10 lightning cables because they'll be throwing it away for the newer USB3.0 lightning cables which is basically happening with USB-C right now.

Reuse existing cables for charge, transfer stuff wirelessly. Update the cable when iPhone goes portless. It's more environmentally friendly this way.

How exactly? If I upgrade to iPhone 15 I’m not keeping my current phone. So my dozens of lightning cables are now pointless.

And if the don’t upgrade everything (AirPods Max) to USB-C, then I need DUPLICATE cables. It’s a mess.
They're not pointless just because they don't work with your new phone. They still work with billions of iPhones out there. I don't know how old your current phone is but most likely you will sell it or pass it down since it's still functioning. How about including those dozens! of lightning cables so the new owner can use them?

Of course there won't be any new features.
Apple likes to bleed its customers dry, first to buy the new version with solely a different charging port - and then introduce a new product to catch them again.

People are not going to run out and trash their perfectly working AirPods just for a new case with usb c. This is for people in the market for a new pair of AirPods.

You do realise iPhone will not be the only device out there using USB-C. It's ubiquitous. A lot of people already have a lot of USB-C cables. There's no sudden demand for billions of new cables. If iPhone stayed on Lightning there would be just as many new Lightning cables made to go with those phones. Oh and nobody knows if or when the iPhone will really go portless, that's a very old rumour that may or may not turn out to be true, eventually.

Including nearly everything else Apple sells.

but most likely you will sell it

packing into a box, print a useless label, put in a gas car driving to UPS, sorted into a UPS truck that's headed to a plane that uses tons of jet fuel, onto another truck to a UPS center, sorted to another gas guzzling truck.

wow, very environmentally friendly.

A lot of people already have lightning cables. Best to reuse and advocate Apple to stop including cables in the box. But now Apple won't exclude the cable because of the port change.

There's no sudden demand for billions of new cables.

There will absolutely be a sudden demand. Agree to disagree.

If iPhone stayed on Lightning there would be just as many new Lightning cables made to go with those phones.

Except Apple could have easily excluded the cable from the box just like they did with the headphones and chargers because Apple knows most of returning customers already have lightning cables.

Actually you have no idea what you're talking about. This thing is worse than just sticking with lightning until things go portless.
iPhone will not go portless any time soon, and good so, there is not a single
Benefit with going portless other then maybe water protection and design, I don’t want an iPhone without a connection, Wireless charging will
Never be as good as cable at least in the next 10 years, you loose so
Much energy in heat and so much slower transfer speeds, you just don’t have any fast connectors so you just don’t know. I have everything on 40gbs and then I have a super slow iPhone we’re it takes hours to transfer things of just makes no sense at all.
