Not going to lie, I'm not a fan of the redesigned remote (color, thickness, extra buttons that provide same functionality as Bravia Sync, but mainly the wheel). It seems like Apple moved backwards rather than forwards with the new device. I mean, iPhone, iPad, and the the Magic Trackpad all feature a flat, rectangular surface for touch input just like the original Siri remote. The motion is perfectly smooth and easily mimicked in the iPhone's remote app. The circle wheel is like adding a physical keyboard to an iPhone; thank u, next lol.

Thankfully the original remote is still available at Best Buy. I hope Apple doesn't discontinue it.
and you can always use your iPhone and your TV's remote

Honestly… Third day into all new Apple TV’s in the house. I miss the old remote. The old gesture section was more like an extension of the iPhone and felt natural. This new one is large, clunky, button driven, I don’t know… Feels like it went back in time so far.
and yet that is what so many people whined about with the last one. Personally I love the old one, intuitive, simple, put it away when your done with it, you never lose it

Surprise, surprise. I wish Google would stop thinking they know best when it comes to video playback and just use the native player. It’s pretty horrible UI practice to have a different control interface to most other apps on the OS and their video player is missing key controls like being able to adjust the volume. If they used the native player all the controls would be in their familiar places and things like the new Apple TV remote would be supported.

Google has the size, scale and market share to basically tell folks to pound sand.

Whether Apple likes it or not, the other major players using alternative video players is as much their problem as the other company. Customers don't care who's fault any of it is -- they just associate a feature as "not working right on their Apple TV"

When I got my new remote I also couldn’t make the gesture work. Opened the quick start guide only to find out it wasn’t even mentioned in the manual at all. Finally found it out myself. But I have to say it works well. But they clearly missed the mark communicating how it suppose to work. If even seasoned Apple users struggle with it at first.

Still love the new remote though!

Hulu is the only streaming app I’ve found that uses the ‘wheel’ function so far, it doesnt work in Netflix, YoutubeTV, appletv+ apps. When working, it’s great but aggravating in unsupported apps right now.

This remote still seems unnecessarily complicated. I don’t want a remote I have to learn how to use. We returned the last Apple TV because the whole family hated the remote. This one still seems too complicated.
Personally, I totally love the new remote and it was very easy and fast to get used to it.

What I get from this 3rd world problem thread is that people aren’t even willing to do some testing for themselves anymore and want anything explained up to the very last detail.

I mean c’mon, you have some more buttons and instead of just a sensitive pad it is now a smaller pad and a click-jog-wheel that has a very good feel and also the dial works just find for Apple’s apps that I tested. 3rd party apps need time to adapt, they still can be controlled like on the old remote…

I have done some real in-depth testing yesterday and I was hooked for like 5 hours since I totally loved how the new ATV 4K is opening apps, skipping movies/tv series and everything else just feels perfect. I can honestly say that I don’t ever want to use anything else anymore. Smart TV functionality is completely dead to me since Apple improves the ATV a lot every generation.

I’s the most used and best Apple product that I use for hours every day.

3rd generation? Oh, never mind. It is the 2nd generation Siri Remote, 3rd generation ATV remote.

That first generation remote was a slippery devil, and with the tapered sides, they could slip into so many thin areas...

I never use a first-party remote - I have a Harmony Hub and use my Harmony remote with my new Apple TV in Bluetooth mode. I wish I could have bought the ATV without such an expensive remote since it will be consigned to a drawer. I did have a go with it and much prefer the older remote TBH.

??

Netflix and AppleTV+ certainly do support the jog wheel. Pause > rest finger on wheel > wait half a beat > scrub.

Are you fully updated? Perhaps try a restart?

Must be something buggy, while using Hulu today it stopped appearing.

Hah! That occurred to me as well! It's the way the internet is today. I'm not wild about the Siri button being on the side. But know I'll eventually get used to it. But for sure...the last thing I'd do is go on to a public forum and have a good moan about something that in the end is mice nuts - I'd be embarrassed.

The touch features on the remote were working so inconsistently than I just disabled it for now. I'm thinking it will probably be tweaked and be usable eventually, but for now the remote works really well just by clicking the buttons.
Wait you can fully disable the touch function?

"You're spinning it wrong" - Apple

Very disappointed with the rollout of this feature, this should have been explained better that you need to rest your finger, took some google-fu to figure this out.

Where was this article when I was testing out two new Siri remotes last night?! The scrubbing feature isn't mentioned in the instruction booklet at all, so I spent a good half hour trying to figure it out. I eventually did through trial and error, but it's far from intuitive. Otherwise, I'm happy with the remotes.

Wait you can fully disable the touch function?
  1. Open Settings
    Settings
    on Apple TV.
  2. Go to Remotes and Devices > Clickpad.
Select Click and Touch to allow both clicking and touch surface tracking. Select Click Only to turn off touch surface tracking.

But no accidental inputs and the buttons felt solid. Instead we got a huge, thick, noisy buttons that sound like a toy when you click them

For me it just depends on the app I'm using. The +10/-10 seconds has been the same. Works on some and not on others. I'm hoping that over time these apps will update.
