NO ONE, & I mean NO ONE, including those INSIDE Apple, have ANY clue as to how this will play out !

ALL I can say is that 100% FREE Ad-based apps will (soon) completely disappear from the App Store !
Good I pay for quality. The free **** is trash 99% of the time. No one wants to work for free. If it’s free you are the product.

Good point about reselling to data brokers. FB has been trying to hide behind the "hurting small business" veneer but we know all that data is bought and sold in bulk like a commodity yet eerily targeted and precisely personal on all they can know about you.

Apple believes we should have a choice according to the ad above ... so can I choose to download apps from a browser like I can on a Mac?
They believe you should have a choice about being tracked. Having a choice about one thing, doesn't mean you also believe in having a choice about everything. Don't want to get political, but there are several examples of one side wanting to have the choice about one thing, and not having a choice about another thing.

Privacy for consumers has been a waning privilege in the tech-social media world for the last 5 years, it’s nice to see Apple not only exposing consumers are being tracked, but they actually executed a feature to help combat tracking. This is a huge step in the right direction.

I dunno about that, unless I'm missing something. Sure, they won't have information about you to show relevant ads, but they can/will still show something and get paid for displaying it, even if it isn't relevant to you.

This video is really awesome, calm and well done.

Yes, you can. You can buy an Android phone. On iPhone the source of only the App Store for applications is a security feature of the platform and relying on the old install anything from anywhere (from back in the 80's) is way obsolete in todays security atmosphere. But Android is waiting for you if you don't want to subscribe to that point of view.

Now that iOS 14.5 is available to the public, App Tracking Transparency is being enforced by Apple. Developers are no longer able to access the advertising identifier of your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV without your express permission, which will prevent developers from tracking you across apps and websites for ad targeting preferences.

If that sounds confusing, Apple has created an App Tracking Transparency video that's now available on YouTube, walking through what the changes mean. "It's a feature that gives you a choice," says the voiceover in the video. "A choice on how apps use and share your data."

The video goes on to describe the kinds of data that apps have access to like location, age, health information, spending habits, and browsing history. Apple says that data collection can be useful for tracking a run or letting a local shop advertise discounts when you're nearby, but "some apps are taking more data than they need," sharing it with advertisers and data brokers.

Apple explains that some apps collect "thousands of pieces of information about you" to create a digital profile that's then sold to others for ad targeting purposes and to "predict and influence behaviors and decisions."

"Your information is for sale, you have become the product," Apple says in the ad, explaining why the App Tracking Transparency feature exists. "Whatever you choose is up to you."

Sounds great not seen any apps asking yet is this because I’ve unknowingly said yes before the upgrade and it’s only new apps that’s installed after the update or what ?

Personally, whenever possible, I have always paid for the full version just to avoid ads.

Now for Apple to step up and change their own policies for themselves regarding tracking and information.

Why? It doens't remove adds. Just not personalised.

Some things you can expect from your favourite ad supported apps if you say "Don't Allow" to this prompt:

  1. You will still see ads. These developers still need to make money and you may be worth more than you think as an ad viewer.
  2. You may be prompted with an IAP option to remove ads as well, because...
  3. You will get annoyed with ads that don't make sense to you, are lower quality, unskippable, and generally worse. Remember before ad-tracking cookies and EVERYONE saw Viagra ads on every page they visited because Pfizer won every impression auction they tried to buy, and there was no context around who would see the ad? Get ready for that.
  4. A higher IAP price than you might expect, especially for apps that require more consistent updates over the life of the app. Your favourite third-party to-do or note-taking app that used to rely on ads might require a subscription as high as $5 per month, maybe more.
Apple acted like a bull in a China shop for the right reasons. Their motivations are good, but they've really not thought through the long tail implications of this change.

To be clear: I support ATT and Apple's ideals. Their backup solutions like SKAdNetwork are still woefully inadequate, and they didn't even make an attempt to help ad-supported apps stave off a 50%-ish drop in eCPMs, because yes, a lot of truly crappy apps are ad supported, and there's some crappy ads. Instead of trimming the walled garden, Apple is torching it and seeing what grows back, or is hardy enough to survive.

Unless of course, you're in an Apple app, since Apple can do whatever it wants to deliver ads in Stocks, Weather, and News, since that process is opt-out, whereas any third party has to act on an opt-in basis.

I don't think you understand this feature at all.

Apple doesn't really care about your privacy, the truth is that this is an uppercut to Google in a boxing match. Although Apple compete against Google on iOS/Android , App Store/Google Play, Maps, and others they have 2 different business models. Apple chargers high prices for their products and thats their source of income. Google gives free products and the data of the users is their source of income.

Apple is cutting the administration line to Google.

I haven’t seen one single app ask me anything.

I have turned the toggle in Transparency on and off. Makes no difference.

Do I have to sign out of iCloud, reset my phone, reboot or what?
I'm guessing if you uninstall the app then reinstall it, it will kick in and ask? If the app is already installed does that mean the defaults are grant permissions?

Actually just read the MacRumors article on this and if you have it set to off, you won't see any prompts. If it is set to on, you will see prompts when the app tries to access the identifier.
