YouTube Music Integration May Be Coming to HomePod

YouTube Music may soon be available directly on the HomePod and the HomePod mini through Siri integration, according to code hidden in the YouTube Music app that was discovered by software miner @aaronp613.

There is a section in the YouTube Music app that is labeled "Connect With HomePod," which suggests that integration could be coming at some point in the future. Apple has supported a handful of third-party music services on HomePod for the last couple of years, so this functionality is already available with Pandora, iHeartRadio, Deezer, and TuneIn Radio.


Music services like Spotify have not adopted this option even though Apple made the SiriKit Media feature available in iOS 14, so it remains limited in scope. With the direct play function, users can set a third-party service as a default music option, and when Siri on HomePod is asked to play content, Siri will play music from the selected service.

If YouTube Music does indeed add support for playing music directly on the HomePod, it could make the streaming service more appealing to Apple users.

One of the biggest problems with smart speakers is that it strips the owner of the speaker from direct control of what they can enjoy on them. Much like how "the cloud" puts strangers in between people and their data, smart speakers also wedge strangers in between people and full use of a very simple piece of technology. The strangers get to decide if the speaker can natively play this or that instead of the owner of the speaker.

For this and other reasons, I'm a forever fan of "dumb" speakers, which just play... anything I throw at them... with no preferences/biases/etc and no approval by for-profit strangers and/or dealmaking requirements between strangers. I have various computing devices with the "smarts" in them if I want any of that kind of control. IMO speakers and storage do NOT need gatekeepers, toll booth operators, etc.

Speaking only for myself: those happy to have new kinds of middlemen wedged in, enjoy those kinds of services. I am able to see some very select benefits... but none of them are important enough to me to let strangers become middlemen for my data or audio.

You can play any music thru the homepod from your phone or computer.

The HomePod will play anything you AirPlay at it. The integration in question is about voice commands, and a dumb speaker won’t give you that either.

Nevertheless I also prefer dumb speakers, mostly because you can get much better-sounding ones, and can also attach a PC etc. and not have any latency.

“Dumb” speakers have no phone or computer dependencies, no OS requirements, no connection type requirements, etc. Play from phone- iPhone or your friend's Android/Symbian/Blackberry/Windows/Harmony/Etc- or turntable or Betamax or Edison’s gramophone. Play from computer (Mac, PC, Ubuntu, BSD), or first gen iPod or Amiga output or Sony Walkman, cassette deck, Aunt Meg's SuperVHS player, CD players, reel to reel, 35mm film, Kinescope, etc.

Bring ANY device over and it will play audio on “dumb” speakers.

I tell Siri to play things on my dumb speakers often. AppleTV, iDevices and Mac have the Siri “smarts(?)” in them too. And yes, dumb speakers come in many quality levels and many configurations beyond only stereo.

I can Airplay anything to them too… either through (Airplay to) AppleTV or direct Airplay to the Receiver that powers them. But Airplay is limited to sources on computing devices. There’s lots of other sources of audio that don’t stream to iDevices. “Dumb” speakers will play anything.

You can place HomePods in all your rooms and then automatically have voice control everywhere hands-free without having to turn anything else on or having to carry any device with you. That's what people want and dumb speakers don’t give you.

Not picking on HPs at all. There are certainly some benefits. Another is that one doesn't have to run speaker wires from a receiver or amplifier. Another is one can easily move them to many rooms or outside and quickly be listening to things on them. Etc. "Dumb" speakers need speaker wire. They don't easily move. They need a receiver or amplifier to play anything. Etc.

Nevertheless, the point is that I don't appreciate strangers being wedged in between a very simple technology- speakers- and that such "deals" need to be made to allow owners of speakers to directly play something on the speakers THEY own.

I can offer many positives of the cloud too, but feel the same about it: don't like strangers wedged in between me and my data.

Both speakers and data storage don't need that but bright minds seem to be finding ways to get themselves inserted in as new kinds of "gatekeepers" in stuff that traditionally was fully within owner control. Is there some tangible benefits to such stuff? Yes! But I personally still don't appreciate that negative... and thus have the greater attraction to "dumb" speakers and managing my own storage/cloud vs. letting strangers wedge in there.

I do happen to have a few "smart" speakers myself, for some of these unique benefits you and I offered (and the ones offered by BuffaloTF in the next post). But the ones I have are already able to work with ALL sources of streaming music- no special deals/accommodations like this one required- and directly play Apple Music or anything via Airplay too.

Well... one thing in favor of them, at least what I'd consider the modern dumb speaker in the same size/performance of a smart one, is they have batteries and bluetooth. So I'm not tied to a power outlet, and my phone can be the smarts for it over any voice control assistant. And I say that having HomePods and Echos.
