I recently migrated from an iPad 9 to an iPad 11, and also iPhone XR to 15.
Both the old iPad and iPhone had curved edges, so they were comfortable to hold.
Both the new ones have straight edges which are kind of sharp and very uncomfortable IMO.
I had no case on my previous devices, but now I feel forced to have it.
This is a very clear case of form before function IMO.
I really hope they go back to rounded edge.

Every few years, they change their designs and cycle back to ones similar to previous models. I’m certain we'll see the curved edges again.

I migrated in April 2023 and still miss the handheld comfort of the older iPad. I also miss the soft edges of the leather Smart Cover compared to the Smart Folio edges which are sharp enough to cut cheese. I remove the Smart Folio when holding the iPad, so it's essentially just a stand for when my iPad is on the desk.

I have a Kindle Scribe for e-reading and comparing the comfort of the two devices is like comparing dress shoes and moccasins.

I recently upgraded from an old iPad Pro 9.7" to an 11" iPad Air M3. I disliked the rounded edges on the old iPad, and wasn't a fan of it on the old iPhones either - it makes the device more slippery and difficult to keep ahold of, like trying to handle a bar of soap. I hope Apple never goes back to the softer/rounded edges on any of their devices.

I don't care much for the aesthetics of the boxy edges we have now, but I suspect they do provide an advantage (not foolproof) against bending the gadget. That's reason enough for me to put up with them. 🤷‍♂️

For phones which you hold with one hand, rounded edges make it too easy to slip out of your hand, especially as phones have gotten bigger.
I think the iPad went to flat edges to magnetically attach the Pencil 2. Only one edge is needed for that, but it might be weird to just have one flat edge. Also the flat edges probably make it attach better to the Magic Keyboard.
