Synaptics Debuts New Fingerprint Sensors Capable of Scanning Through Display Glass

Amid rumors suggesting Apple plans to debut a 2017 iPhone with an edge-to-edge display with built-in Touch ID, Synaptics has announced its own under-glass fingerprint detection solution, debuting a new line of Natural ID FS9100 optical fingerprint sensors.

The FS9100 sensors are capable of scanning a fingerprint through 1mm of full cover glass, allowing for button-free display designs that are still able to take advantage of fingerprint recognition functionality.

According to Synaptics, the sensors have been specifically designed for placement under cover glass, including 2.5D glass, located in the front, bottom bezel of smartphones and tablets.

The FS9100 sensors eliminate the need for cutouts on the display of a device, and because they're under glass, they're scratchproof, waterproof, and respond well to wet fingers. Wet finger performance is something that causes most fingerprint sensors, including Apple's, to fail.

Synaptics says its sensors are also designed to be thin and consume a minimal amount of power, while also using AI to distinguish between fake and actual fingers.

Apple likely has its own proprietary solution in the works for the display of the 2017 iPhone 8 because it has been in development for some time and is said to have in-house engineers working on the product, but Synaptics is a known Apple supplier and provided Apple with LCD display drivers in 2015 following its acquisition of Renesas SP Drivers, a chip company Synaptics purchased in 2014.

If the rumors are true, Apple's iPhone 8 will include a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, a camera, and other components that are located behind the display of the device, entirely eliminating the existing home button and allowing for an iPhone that looks like a single piece of glass.

Other rumors for the iPhone 8 suggest it will include a glass body, an OLED display, a faster A11 processor, and wireless charging functionality.

Synaptics' optical fingerprint sensors are scheduled to begin sampling during the first quarter of 2017, with production to begin in the second quarter of the year.

Lots of assumptions being made that the iPhone 8 will include this. If rumors were true, the current iPhone would have wireless charging, a projector, 3D screen, virtual keyboard, and much more (all according to "reputable" reports from MacRumors and their sources).

Please remember that a rumor is just a rumor. It's silly to get bent out of shape after every Apple announcement when something that was never promised wasn't included in a new product. BUT THE LOTTERY GUYS MADE ME BELIEVE I'D WIN!!

Good for Google! More disposable after 3 months Android phones!

Display glass is much less scratch resistant than sapphire glass.

This same company makes some of the worst trackpads in the world. They have not demonstrated the ability to make a good product.

And somehow MacRumours still thinks 2017 will be the iPhone 8? Like Apple is gonna stop with their 'S' cycle.... The iPhone 8 will be in 2018 while the iPhone 7S will debut in 2017 and will look the same as the 7.

These same rumours happened before the 6S, you had articles that it will be the iPhone 7 in 2015 instead of the 6S.

Anyway if Samsung does the bezel less, no home button, finger printer reading screen in March then I'll be switching over. I won't be waiting til 2018 for removal of the home button... This should have been done with the iphone 7.

My prediction: all this talk of a "no bezel" front with embedded fingerprint sensor will spur the Android competition to invent similar tech or other smart solutions. Those will be included in the 2017 flagships, while Apple evaluates the technology for possible release in 2020, and will release an iPhone 8 with only a design refresh and some gimmicky stuff, probably force feedback screen.

Samsung will no doubt have something like this in their S8 in February (not that I see them as innovative or even like their phones, but such rumors about the S8 has been around for a long time now, and samsung are known to pick up apple rumors and act fast on them).

They have. They teamed up with Microsoft to make a touchpad that's every bit as good as the MBP trackpad. It's the cheap ass OEM's who have never bothered to implement it.

I just do not see why people get that excited about bezel-less and buttonless phones. They are just not very ergonomic, in my opinion. I would like to have a phone with a bit more grip, without having to use a case. I still think that the 3G was the most comfortable phone to hold.

I guess rather than the finger print reading being "anywhere" on the screen it will still be in one place and software will direct you to its location when it's needed. The home button I guess will work anywhere in the bottom quarter of the phone.

No one has suggested the power button would be replaced. We currently have a buttonless "home button" on the iPhone 7, all that's required is the under screen fingerprint technology to take it one step further.
