Siri0us Voice Dictation Hack Removed From Cydia Over Licensing Issues

Siri0us, a package for jailbroken iPhones that brings Siri-like dictation to previous generation iPhones, has been removed from the Cydia store. The developer was forced to remove the package after Nuance, the company that makes the voice recognition technology in Siri0us, refused to sell a license to use its offerings in the program.

iDownloadBlog reports that Eric Day, the man behind Siri0us, is looking into free alternatives to Nuance. In the meantime, there's no indication how long Siri0us will continue to work for those that already have it installed.

are you sure that it was Cydia who pulled it and not the guy who posted it.

Also it is not the first time Cydia pulled apps. I know in the past they have pulled pirated apps and malware.

I guess some of the articles suggest it was voluntary on the part of Day. Interesting to know pirated apps get pulled from Cydia, I didn't know that.

Licensing Nuance is right

They have been at voice recognition for 20 years. Theirs works better than anyone else's that I know. It's a specialized knowledge. I say that Nuance is one of the rather small number of things in software that should be patented, because it's hard to do, and it took a lot of investment, and now they're cashing in. That's the way it should work.

Codecs are the same thing. It was really, really hard to come up with H.264. It's open, but not free. Fine with me.

Apple is obviously paying a big licensing fee. That's good.

Hm, I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple is the main reason for the refusal to grant a license.

Apple has an interest in users with legacy phones to upgrade to the 4GS, particularly since there is very little else that's noticeable that differentiates the 4GS from the previous generation iPhone.

On the other hand, Nuance sells stuff like the Flex-T9 keyboard app for Android, which includes Nuance's Dragon dictation and word recognition technology, as well as the Dragon Go! app for iOS, and may have decided it doesn't want the competition.

But, if I had to bet, I'd bet on Apple being the culprit.

BTW, I personally have not found Nuance to be so much better than other similar offerings, and neither Flex-T9, nor Siri, are anywhere near flawless.

Cydia is not in the business of pirating software, it is in the business of providing non-Apple approved software. It's this kind of thinking that gives jailbreaking a bad name.

You mean freedom for carriers, not customers... because Verizon will happily sell you an Android phone loaded with craplets you cannot remove, HTC and Motorola will happily sell you their handsets with a skin you cannot remove... So, does the customer truly have the freedom to do "whatever [they] want" with THEIR Android phone??

Glad it wasn't using the Siri servers (I have a 4S and would hate to see the servers bogged down by the influx of jailbroken non 4S siri users), but its a bummer to see that I won't be able to see this hack on my iPad 2.

Because unlike this hack it actually lets you look things up with your voice. And it even integrates with other apps. Something Siri doesn't yet do.

Well, really, the whole point of Cydia is to have a legitimate marketplace for people who want to sell or give away iPhone Apps and Extensions that Apple decided not to offer in the App Store.

So things like springboard customization, new icons, and tools like SSH have a home for tinkerers.

It's not really about piracy (even though it's sometimes portrayed that way.)

No, the point is to get around the restrictions Apple has put on apps sold in the app store. This is perfectly legal in and of itself.

Bah. Disappointment prevails as I was probably going to JailBreak my iPhone 4 and grab that when I had a spare afternoon. I do hope it makes it back onto Cydia. I refuse to buy a whole new phone for a feature that will work perfectly well on my previous generation one.
