Official Google Chrome Browser Beta Due in Early December?

CNET reports on recent discussion that indirectly reveals that Google is planning on releasing an official beta version of its Chrome browser for Mac in "early December". Developer builds of the Mac version of Chrome have been available for testing for several months, but the move to a beta designation implies a more polished version that could be considered acceptable for many mainstream users.

The disclosure came as part of a posting from Google Chrome product manager Nick Baum encouraging web developers to begin utilizing a feature called Browser Actions that allows them to place interactive icons in the main Chrome toolbar. Baum acknowledged that the functionality is currently only available on Windows and Linux versions of Chrome, but pointed to the benefits of being able to "polish" the experience ahead of the beta launch in early December, further noting that such a move would remove Mac compatibility until that time.
Why make the switch now? The earlier you switch, the more time you will have to polish your experience for our Beta launch in early December. We realize this means dropping Mac support for a couple of weeks, but we already have people working on that. If you prioritize the Windows and Linux versions, we'll bring you cross-platform parity as soon as we can!

Google currently offers three distribution channels for Chrome: Developer Preview for early-stage development, Beta for relatively stable but unpolished builds, and Stable for "rock solid" performance without the latest features still undergoing testing. The apparent move of the Mac version into Beta channel releases confirms that Google is continuing to push forward on Mac development despite having missed what appeared to have been a goal of a full launch of Chrome for Mac in the first half 2009.

Why in the world has this taken so long to come out? I know Chromium has been around for a long time, but Google has been glacially slow on getting out a Mac beta.
 
I don't really understand what this whole post means, we might get a Beta version of Chrome for Mac?

I remember using Chrome on Windows and it was way better than IE or Firefox, but Safari on Mac sure is a LOT better than any of them! So if Chrome wants to be good, it has to be at least as good as Safari on Mac (not Safari for PC).
 
I have to wonder how many of you have actually used a recent developer's build. They're actually very good. Feels faster than any browser on a Mac, though a bit unstable with flash at the moment.

If you're a big user of anything Google related (for me that includes heavy usage of Gmail, Voice, Calendar, Reader, and Docs...), it should be stated that Chromium appears to load these pages muchhh faster than even the nightly webkit (this is anecdotal, though in my opinion honest).

Nightly webkit was previously my browser of choice for Mac, but aside from ClickToFlash, I don't miss a single thing from it...

I agree. The developer builds are lighter on my machine than Safari.
 
The only part i like about Chrome is i can open a new tap and google start away, no need to click on the google bar in Safair and no need to change how my tabs start at.
 
Meh Safari with a new GUI that's released 6-12 months after PC builds... no thanks.
 
I have to say that I agree. I am a little put off by the time that it is taking to get a fully functional version of Chrome out for the Mac. Sure there have been many a developer build, but there not complete by any means.

It all comes down to the fact that I am used to Firefox and it works just fine for me on Mac. I see no reason whatsoever to switch.
 
Unfortunately this has just proven Google doesn't consider the Mac platform to be a priority, and it doesn't bode well for future updates either.

Given we already have a slick and fast Webkit browser already I don't really see the need for it anyway. I guess it comes down to user preference.

It's all about context. One of the reasons people buy Apple computers is because they're a cohesive system, the same [generally] couldn't be said of Windows PCs. Comparing the dominance of a convicted monopolist and their browser that doesn't conform to most web standards and Apple's Safari also seems, to pardon the pun, like comparing apples and oranges.
 
Chrome is a worthwhile browser on Windows but less than compelling on the Mac imho. Safari & Omniweb leave it far behind in most respects.

I've quite enjoyed using Chrome on my MBP, maybe it's just me but it actually seems to be running faster on my machine than Safari. Also, it works better with the web Citrix client we have at work.

I'm sure I'm an oddball, (oh man if my wife reads that I actually owned up to saying that, I'll never hear the end LOL)
Anyways, I may be the oddball, but I find myself often having more than one browser open. I just seem to get better results for different tasks in each one, so I switch between them.
 
uh... ive been using chrome on osx for a while now :confused: am i missing something? I know its not a full build though....

I agree 100%. Google Chrome in Windows XP/Vista/7 is quite stable and very fast indeed. However, few third-party extensions exist, but hopefully Google rectifies this in the "final" Version 4.0 release so we finally see a decent competitor to Firefox 3.5.5.

Flash performance anyone? Safari has been deemed as the least capable browser with regards to displaying flash content than any other browser on any other platform. Considering most websites have some sort of flash, be it the ad banner at the top of the screen or the youtube video you're trying to watch, I'd think this would be a huge disadvantage to Safari users.

P.S. This includes Safari on the Windows platform.
