Fortune reports on a new research note from analyst Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray, who examined new April U.S. retail sales data for Apple from NPD and found very strong year-over-year Mac growth and a somewhat larger than predicted drop in iPod sales. The combination suggests that the iPad may be having more of a cannibalization effect on the iPod than on Macs, suggesting possible upside to Apple's financial performance as consumers are "upsold" to the iPad rather than holding back from Mac purchases.
"April NPD data gives us the first sign of the degree to which the iPad cannibalizes iPod or Mac sales," he writes. "From the early NPD data, it appears that the iPad has a minimal cannibalization impact on Mac sales, and could be slightly cannibalizing iPod sales. Given the ASP (4x) and margin profile of the iPad, we see this as a net positive for Apple's business."
As noted by All Things Digital, Munster's report suggests that the cannibalization of iPods rather than Macs is a direct result of Apple's positioning of the iPad and the capabilities offered by it. Munster says:
We believe in the long run Mac cannibalization will exist, but will be minimal. Apple has successfully limited the iPad functionality to primarily content consumption, vs. content creation on a Mac. And relative to the iPod, the physical size of an iPad provides a meaningfully different value proposition (portability vs. screen size).
NPD's data shows U.S. Mac sales up 39% year-over-year for the month of April, well ahead of the 19% consensus increase predicted by Wall Street analysts. According to Munster, that projects out to total sales of a strong 3.1-3.2 million Macs for the current quarter based on Apple's sales patterns.

The iPod, on the other hand, saw a 17% decline in unit sales year-over-year, significantly larger than the 9% decline predicted by the Street. Still, Apple may be on track to sell 9-10 million iPods this quarter, a healthy number given the impact of the iPad.

iPad cannibalization of other Apple product lines has been a focus for research analysts looking to understand the effect of the company's new device on its bottom line. Research from Morgan Stanley published earlier this month similarly showed a significant potential hit to the iPod, with 41% of surveyed customers planning to purchase an iPad saying they were doing so instead of purchasing an iPod touch. The same survey showed 24% and 14% of planned iPad customers holding off from buying Mac notebooks and desktops respectively, with another 20% (notebook) and 13% (desktop) forgoing non-Apple computers.

Apple products are cannibals!!!?

I can't support this type of behavior from my iDevices.

Not surprising considering the cost of the iPod touch. We’ll see when Apple releases their next earnings in July.

This is why Apple needs to start branching into different markets that still make sense for them, like the TV market for example. (They also need to freaking get serious about AppleTV)

I would love an updated Apple TV, but the market for an Internet-connected set-top box is small. Based on estimates, they’ve sold roughly 8 million units in three years, yet they’ve sold over one million iPads in one month.

From what I can tell, that makes the Apple TV the best selling device by far in the media extender category (WD Live, Roku, Popcorn Hour, Windows Media Center Extenders, Soundbridge, etc).

The money is not there yet.

Interesting article comparing Apple TV sales to TiVo, etc:

How about they start getting serious in the Business sector... I know, not going to happen- but only if.
I guess I'm in the business sector since we use 99% Macs for CG here. However, this long drought (New MaPros) has me sitting on this years budget. Come on Apple I have money to give please release something new ;)

I'd like a new AppleTV, too. I have one & it's really good. I would like higher quality videos & closed captioning, but probably won't happen. Also would like, but probably won't happen: DVR capability & game console ability. Something like a Nintendo Wii. That's something I'm a little surprised Apple didn't think of. Actually, I remember seeing Apple patents for something like it, but after the Wii came out.

I'd like new Mac Pros, too. If money was no object, I'd love to have a 4 drive system, one drive for Mac OS, one for Windows, one for Unix, and one for data (ie music, movies, documents, etc. so if one of the OSes goes down, I won't lose my stuff). Also, a new 30" display. I'll admit, I'm no Pro, I just like having the latest & greatest.

Not surprising. After owning an iPad since launch day, I find myself using it less and less. Maybe should've considered a Macbook Air or something...

EDIT: whoops, read the title as Mac cannibalization by iPad. iPod cannibalization? Maybe iPod Touch, but you can't just stick an iPad in your pocket and go for a stroll.

Maybe they release a camera on the iPod Touch this year?

Stimulating their products once again. Nonetheless, this really has to do with the sales decline of regular iPods.

I would hope & somewhat expect that we may see a price drop for some iPods.

?

Apple are creating a whole new market with the iPad (or at least having a damn good go at it) and the rest of their business is very very strong indeed. If the sales of the iPod Touch were dropping because the market was shrinking or a better product from a competitor was out there then yes, they'd start looking at other directions but right now they're just improving the bottom line with every passing day.

As for Apple TV... I really think that's going to keep ticking over until Apple moves your FULL iTunes account to the cloud, content and all (and hopefully offers a subscription service at the same time). As soon as that happes Apple TV suddenly makes a LOT more sense, especially as you'd (in theory anyway) no longer need a computer to sync all your iDevices to. As it is though it's difficult to see what they could offer over and above what they do now that'd really make it take off.

Al this talk about Apple iPad and iPod sales and no mention of how hard hit the game consoles and games have been since the iPad hit the streets:

Video Game Sales Make Surprise Plunge in April, by Chris Morris, CNBC

Here are a couple short excerpts:

"Sales of video game software and hardware plummeted in April, shocking industry observers who were expecting the numbers to be slightly positive or, worst case, down just slightly. That could mean a rough Friday for video game stocks.
On the whole, sales were off 26 percent to $766 million, with software sales (the most closely followed of the numbers) plunging 22 percent to $398.5 million, according to NPD Group, which tracks video game sales. Because April 2009 had relatively light sales (and thus, an easy comparable) industry insiders and investors were hoping to at least tow the line."

Hardware Even Worse
"Hardware sales were even more discouraging than software, falling 37 percent from a year ago to just $249.3 million. The Nintendo Wii remained the top seller, but only moved 277,200 units.
Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 were relatively neck and neck, selling 180,800 and 185,400 respectively. The handheld Nintendo DS system sold fewer than 441,000 units, despite the launch of a new version of the platform at the end of March.
When compared to the March numbers, Sony’s hardware sales were off 48 percent, Microsoft’s were down 45 percent, and the Wii tumbled 50 percent."

I'm sure the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch wasn't the primary reason for this drop, however, I think it signals an interest away from game specific playing and toward devices that can play games as well as do other things, and where the game costs is significantly lower then those for "game only" devices.

Not surprising considering the cost of the iPod touch.
Exactly. Hopefully this means the iPod Touch will come down in price. The price for the Touch is too close to the iPad especially the most expensive Touch. Apple will probably see sales again for the Touch if they lowered the price. Some people might even buy both if the price for the Touch was low enough because the iPad isn't as portable as a Touch which can be placed in your pocket. Since the prices are so close people are choosing one over the other and it seems like the winner is the iPad.

Has the novelty worn off? I think this is going to be highly common. Loads of people buying the iPad, using it for a few months and then it sits in a drawer mostly.

Good for Apple for getting people to buy it and use it long enough that it can't be returned. The iPad is a novelty.

Different uses for different things

ipod - had the antique 2004 version, used it for music only.

iphone - ipod, and apps (games, reference, and busness).

ipad - my ultimate netbook computer for consumption and creation, replaces my macbook for most uses.

2008 macbook - mass data storage, video editing, converting pdf's into epub for using on my ipad.

wife's iphone - web surfing, ipod, email and facebook

wife's mac mini - web surfing, chatting on AOL's chat rooms.

I was thinking along the lines of serious SBS competition and Xserve model line/replacement. Go after some serious market share.

It's been 440 days since the Mac Pro was updated, which is ridiculous and frustrating. Imagine if HP or Dell didn't update their desktops for that long?

It's a damn good novelty, all but replaced my laptop at home and I don't see that changing any time soon.

That's probably not too far from the truth ;)
But it does confirm the many posts saying the iPad is a big IPod Touch.
Meanwhile I notice that HP are pushing their computer's professional attributes hard in their TV advertising lately.
Maybe they are seeing a hole in the market created by Apple's recent change of focus and seeming abandonment of their Pro customers.

Maybe they are holding off until after the international launch of the ipad in order to pick up a few more sales :D

For you perhaps.

For me? I haven't touched my Macbook Pro since I've gotten my iPad. To each their own.

The funny thing is that I was one of the biggest anti-iPad peeps when it was first announced.

Why the UNIX disc? OS X is UNIX and it comes with X11 installed. You can even run GNOME or KDE in X11 to do graphical UNIX development.

Who cares about cannibalization? People are buying apple products in the end and apple makes money either way!
