More Sources Point to a Touchscreen Apple Netbook in 2009

Dow Jones Newswire reports that Apple is indeed planning to launch a netbook computer with a touchscreen as soon as the 2nd half of this year. They cite "two people close to the situation" as sources.
The mini laptop computers will likely have monitor screens that are between 9.7-inches and 10-inches, one person, who declined to be named, said.

This adds credibility to yesterday's report that Apple had already placed orders for the screen with Taiwan-based Winktek.

Based on this new information, it appears that Apple is targeting a ~10" screen size for this Netbook. The addition of a multi-touch screen adds an interesting twist to the concept of a netbook which is traditionally a clamshell miniaturized laptop.

Has to be a bigger iPhone and not a "book" computer... that's my prediction. A virtual KB just like the iPhone.
 
In my view this would hit the sweet spot as it would be bigger than the iPhone thereby allowing Apple to leverage Cocoa touch within Mac OS X on a true computing device.

Looking forward to the eventual release of this product. Apple needs to enter this segment.
 
I'm hopeing for a device around 7-8" for use in a car in-lieu of these over priced nav systems. I just have no clue how to deal with the stereo speakers.
 
$499 or less and I am def there. I'd LOVE a small machine to take with me everywhere. Especially back and forth from my daily home-->work-->school routine. :)

Need for learning Cocoa Touch, increasing...

Truth be told, if it's good enough for me to do some real mobile work... (2ghz + 1gb ram) ... I'll buy that and a MacPro.

I think if apple can make a sub £500 touch sensitive laptop with at least a 64Gb SSD that's got something along the lines of 2Ghz Core 2 Duo or equivalent low powered Core i7 processor, a decent amount of RAM, shared video or not, it would be an excellent little system and just as good value as the entry level white iBook. Mini USB 2.0 connectors, firewire 800

I can just imagine having something with a mega-wide 1280 x 692 display that's no wider than a small paperback but as thin as a DVD case.

A virtual KB would be the pits. It's fine for the iPhone, typing out quick URLs, SMS, etc. I would not want to use a virtual KB typing a report on Word/Pages or a spreadsheet on Excel/Numbers. That would be counter productive and a giant FAIL. PC Netbooks are capable of most ordinary desktop tasks. A Mac version needs to be just as capable. A virtual KB doesn't cut it, nor does having to schlep a separate USB KB around.

Separately, I wonder if this is why Safari 4 has tabs on top... on a small screen this saves screen space.

If they don't price it into the stratosphere, I will definitely buy one. :D

Shortly thereafter, I will conduct a small, quiet retirement ceremony for my trusty little 12" Powerbook. :( Taps will be played.
 
people should stop calling it netbook, it's not going to cost less than 500$, not even the original iPhone had a netbook price tag..
Either way, netbook NO, touch screen something YES.
And I guess that's why they're still keeping the whitebook alive, for the pricepoint:) ~900$ or maybe a bit less? Especially since it could kill off a bit of ipod touch's/ macbook air's sales.. Launched in September at the iPod Event? Possible
 
I hope it is a tablet that is simply and enlarged iPhone type device. My iPod touch is the perfect Netbook for me. I just wish sometimes when I am going through my google reader on the sofa while watching TV that the screen is a little bigger. The rumoured tablet would be the perfect bridge between iPhone and Macbook/iMac.
 
Apple don't do cheap. I'd be interested in an Apple notebook, but not at sky high prices. The only really cheap solution they provide is the shuffle and it's the bare minimum of an mp3 player. Having said that, the ipod isn't that extortionately priced. if it's more than £450 then i'd overlook it for something cheaper.

Tablet sound better?

@ $900, it's too much. For that price, I'd expect a 2.4 C2D, 200gb HD + all the extras. I'd think in the range of $600 is the sweet spot. If they do that iMac dock idea, then add $1.5k to the price.

Anyone think it will be good enough for field work? I work in apple IT and we are issued thecl white MacBook. The MacBook pro has a better screen as does the air. I need small, portable, good screen and FireWire for target mode. Wish they would start targeting IT enterprise and release a good field edit audio machine all with one release. Think light weight GPS MacBook pro.

Are you kidding? This IS Apple we're talking about. If they do make this, it'll be priced as a Gucci accessory as you say. Apple has no real (apparent) interest in make an inexpensive (as in sub $1000) computer. Look how long the Mac Mini languished before it was updated.

If they DO make one, I kinda hope it is a GPS-enabled, full Mac OS X tablet. It won't be my main computer, just something I can take inventory with and do quick, 5 minute jobs with.
 
Am I the only person who thinks "Touchscreen Apple Netbook" is an extra long phrase that actually refers to "Apple Tablet"?

Isn't it inevitable?

I always thought Apple's excuses were a crock - they never had any qualms about offering the mini with lousy specs (in some respects, worse than a netbook), did they?
 
Please DON'T Let this have a physical keyboard.

I love the iphone's keyboard and considering its size it does a good job.

I want an ultra portable machine which is not incumbered with add ons
 
This much I know for certain

We can say this about it right now:
  1. everyone will complain about features the device is missing :confused:
  2. everyone will bitch about the price :mad:
  3. everyone will proceed to buy it anyway :)
 
Why one size ?. Apple is big enough to come up with 2 to 3 models to spread the diversity around. Some prefer around 7-8inches, others 10-12 inches. There is not in size fits all that Apple realizes. The Air tells the story. It hits the spot for many but missed completely many more (like 3X) more in usability, power, ports, expandability. Price is another factor but lets leave it out for now.

All of which are known compromises. This is where we expect the "Tim Cook" Apple to make a positive swing into things. Imagine iPhone will sell more than 2X the volume if it had 2 sizes to start with. In fact, hard core users *will* buy two. Like I had 5 Macs and needed only 3. The rest are either spare or "in-between" machines.

Until know, Apple knows ALL of their segments of customers already. In fact, they should prove to us so and see where we fit rather than having a Msc student trying to figure this out.

In this economic times, they need to relax the margins on lower cost SKUs in order to move volumes. And volumes they needed like Acer moving 15M units of netbooks at the expense of full-fledged notebooks.

What are you smoking? $900 doesn't buy you a normal laptop with a 2.4 C2D and a 200GB drive, for that you need to pay $1599. If you want all of that and a touchscreen, look closer to the $2000 range. If Apple came out with something in the $900 range that was touch-based, expect Atom processors and best case scenario a 64GB flash drive, with the option of a 128GB for more. Apple prices their stuff more equivalently than that.
