Exactly and thicker would be the iPhone mini. We all know how that sold because of the poor battery life. I don’t think a thinner version of the iPhone mini with worse battery life would sell any better.
If iPhone mini existed with current battery chemistry the battery life would likely be noticeably better than it was for 13 mini, and even 13 mini was better than 12 mini (I owned both, my current iPhone is 13 mini). I think not just battery life, but the thing that killed the "mini" more than even that was its name. I came to this conclusion having discussions with two separate women. They were looking for a new iPhone and when I suggested "iPhone mini" both independently were adamant they didn't want a "mini" iPhone. I showed them my 13 mini and they both had the same reaction, surprised, they considered the phone larger than its name would suggest, "oh, it's not really mini". I have given this feedback to Apple. The name put many people off, I'm sure of it. Go with 5.6" rather than 5.4" and drop the sub-name, and indeed, numbering. Instead, releasing simply "iPhone" in several sizes (3 or 4), and the same sizes for "iPhone Ultra" which could be 33% thicker, with all the camera bells—fatboy. Apple must regain its focus and product clarity, the lines are a mess.

Me and many others I suspect

Mini phones mean a smaller screen and much worse battery life. This hopefully will have a large screen like the Pro Max. Of course there has to be compromises when it comes to camera and battery life. As long as battery life is similar to the regular iPhone I’ll be happy
So am I understanding that you just want a really really thin phone, basically?

Depending on what they do with the rear-view camera, I'm all-in. Especially if the rumored battery pack/case looks good/thin. Day-to-day, I rarely drop below 50% on my 16 Pro Max, so I look forward to not carrying around useless battery weight and only strap on that case on trips (which would then potentially mean I don't have to carry a spare power bank as I do now).

come on guys...

I wonder why they'd give users two charging options (MagSafe and USB-C) when they're so tight for space? Particularly with wireless charging getting faster with every generation

"Apple reportedly plans to release an iPhone 17 Air battery case"

That's what smart people call a "red flag."
Yes, it is. If the “Air” requires a battery case… it defeats the purpose of the product, doesn’t it? Perhaps the case is for the worriers. I keep thinking that, given the Samsung S25 Edge’s battery life, the “Air” might not have as big a problem in this area as many are expecting. We’ll find out this fall, won’t we?

I’ve always wondered what benefit people get from even thinner devices. Once it fits nicely in your pocket, the returns diminish to nothing and you start losing significant functionality for incredibly minor gains in size. You already have to get a case to protect the thing because they’ve made the thing so “thin and sexy” that it’s vulnerable to all sorts of damage. The cameras still have to stick out a ton, which has been an horrible idea since the beginning. Give me a thicker phone with 2-3x the battery capacity so I don’t have to be that guy tethered to a battery bank if he leaves the house for more than a few hours.

Many people are willing to give up some battery life and other things just to have a phone as light as possible. I totally understand the new phone from Samsung and the upcoming Air. Plus, not everybody needs 8 hours of SoT per day. Smaller batteries are also faster to charge.

As for the 16e, things are getting more expensive to manufacture. To my understanding Apple makes the least profit per phone with the 16e among the 16 series so they aren't price gouging anybody with it.

Should be a very good iPhone. But not sure what to expect of the battery life after hearing rumors of battery with lower capacity. Also the single camera might turn out to be a disappointment. Also if it is priced very much similar to the smaller Pro, might be better to get that instead.

Why is that? I've found Apple's silicone iPhone cases to be excellent. Who are these "smart" people?
Because Apple selling a BATTERY case implies that they've determined that the phone's battery life is unacceptable on its own, and is trying to prevent customer blowback.
