With iOS 26, Apple added a bunch of new options for the Background Sounds feature. If you're unfamiliar with it, it is an Accessibility option that allows your iPhone to play soothing background noise, like white noise or rain.

Prior to iOS 26, there were eight Background Sounds options, but now there are a total of sixteen. Here's what's new:
  • Babble
  • Steam
  • Airplane
  • Boat
  • Bus
  • Train
  • Rain on Roof
  • Quiet Night
These join the original eight, which include Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, Rain, Stream, Night, and Fire.

Background Sounds can be toggled on in the Settings app under Accessibility > Audio and Visual > Background Sounds. Once you've opted in and selected a sound, you can toggle Background Sounds on and off through the Hearing Accessibility shortcut in the Control Center.

iOS 26 is only available for developers right now, but Apple plans to release a public beta in July. The software will launch in September alongside new iPhones.

Big “Sleep Timer” app user. Like the snow sounds with sleigh bells. 😴❄️🔔
Haven’t found a replacement yet and requires configurator two to install. o_O

What was that Accessibility feature that would listen and inform you if there was a baby crying, or shots fired?

I think with AI, this could easily now be expanded to a bunch of other sounds being detected.

Boss Coming (Detect Boss's voice and inform you if it's heard nearby)

Bats in Vicinity (Alert you if there are bats flying nearby)

Lie Detection (Alert you if someone's lying due to the particular nuances of their voice)

Toast is Ready (Alert you when the toaster ejects toast)

Tsunami Approaching (self-explanatory)

Wondering how these stack up with asking Siri for sleep sounds, brown noise, etc. to play on HomePods in my bedroom during wind-down. If these are small and you can't detect the loop location, I'm all for them.

Who in their right mind would want an Airplane background noise? Are there people that like that sound? 😵‍💫

Hopefully they “fix” the sound of rain. I need background noise for my sleep but have to go with white noise (not one of the titles listed above, maybe a rename) as rain is incredibly annoying - it’s not rain, it’s rain and loads of birds.
Agreed. I use Ocean as my white noise for sleeping. Rain also sounds a little too much like frying bacon on my HomePod Mini.

I use an app called MyNoise sometimes, and it's got amazing customization so you can dial up and down specific components of the soundscape -- like, dial the cry of seagulls down on a beach scene, or turn thunder up/down on a rain track.

Apple’s work on these background sounds is seriously amazing. They are high quality, and I’ve used the ocean one in a Homepod automation for a long time to set my room up for sleep at the right time. I’m sure all of these will become available also. Side note: i love that one can use these in automations WITHOUT an Apple Music sub - afaik, the only audio one can choose as a source in Home app automations without Apple Music.

Can we get the ability to play these on homepod mini? And while we're at it, can homepod mini add the ability to pair a hardware Bluetooth remote with actually buttons? It's nice to fall asleep to these sounds / or music playlists, but sometimes it's nice to just be sprawled out in the dark falling asleep while still being able to easily control volume and skip tracks by feel without having to wake ourselves up by telling Siri to change the volume or skip tracks etc..

Is there any way of setting a sleep timer with these background noises? That's the only thing putting me off, don't want it running all night.

wait, how is this different from asking Siri to play an "Ambient Sound". Will this supersede or replace it? Is Background Sound the 'new' Ambient Sounds in iOS26?

Edit: oh maybe AS are stored in Apple Music, these new BS will be store in the iOS?

Not sure if I'll answer your question or not, but the sounds in this article are in the Accessibility settings of your phone. Therefore, you don't need Apple Music / they're available for everyone. And I think they're downloaded/stored automatically. Signed, someone who uses them every night.

These background sounds are NOT (contrary to the belief of some) just for people who need sleep noise!
One useful case is when you don't want to be distracted by conversation around you. Airpods Pro block out some conversation, but often not enough, and the right background noise does the job in terms of preventing you from being distracted by conversation, while not being a distraction in its own right.

Wow good perception I didn’t even catch the lil birdies haha but then again I don’t really use this feature..I did however just notice you can play music (classical /jazz go well) and have rain or ocean or whatever also still play…incredible!!!!!!

Will try these out later this year after I update my phone. Rain on roof is interesting.

They should let you mix up however many sounds into one. So say rain on roof mixed with fire place. Ugh too cozy lol

Whaaaat. Would think this would be well a publicized feature if so…great idea for those who, for whatever treason, don’t want it running all night.

My guess is shortcuts app? Have you checked into that avenue yet? I’ve never once made a shortcut so I’m curious how it’s done..

You are doing the Lord’s work, keep it up.

Apple = too awesome smh

Edit: my two cents. They should add city scape (so a mix of traffic, sirens, trains, pedestrians, bikes, outside concerts, parks etc)

And they should add tropical jungle oooo and/or African Savanah…
