Apple today debuted iOS and iPadOS 14, and though not mentioned on stage, the company is quietly introducing a new Find My Network Accessory Program.

The new accessory program will allow third-party products and accessories to work with the Find My app, letting users track items directly on their Apple devices using the Find My app.
Find My will add support for finding third-party products and accessories with the new Find My network accessory program. This will allow customers to use the Find My app to locate other important items in their lives, in addition to their Apple devices. User privacy remains central to the Find My network with end-to-end encryption built in. A draft specification is available for accessory makers and product manufacturers starting today.
Apple is making a draft specification available for accessory makers and product manufacturers that's available as of today.

It's not clear what this means for Apple's own AirTag product that's in the works, but this could be a way for Apple to level the playing field to avoid giving AirTags an unfair advantage.

Apple will release their own Airtags so people can attach it to bags and such, this is to allow I imagine other electronic manufacturers building the feature directly into their devices. E.g. Cars, Electric Bikes/Scooters, Drones, Camera's and the list goes on. So that people don't have to attach a tag to each and every device.

Its the right approach in my opinion.

In terms of tile it won't stop them from utilising this but they will still have to accept that apple will become a hardware competitor for them and with manufacturers incorporating the feature into their devices people won't need as many tags.

Two prong attack.

Could? It is. But it makes third party devices a perfect extra test route for them. They'll probably be pulling data (anonymised) about how they perform in comparison through one app.

So the quote says “Find My Network”, not just Find My App. Does that mean it’ll do the whole job the Tile app’s bluetooth background finding thingy does/did? Does that further mean it’ll work with everyone’s iPhones, not just those with the Tile app installed, thus making Tile much, much better?

I'd say that Apple has recognized that they need to take this anti-trust thing seriously. This, and the iOS 14 default-app-settings, etc. really helps deflate the anti-trust case gov'ts are mounting worldwide. There have been a number of these "little" changes announced lately, not just today.

Yeah. Microsoft lost anti-trust case in EU because of web browser.

I just wonder if there will allow custom engines in those browsers as well. Probably not.

I hope it works with existing my existing Tiles and Keysmart with Tile built in. I'd hate to have to replacement them.

Does this mean that my Tiles might actually now work?
What stopped them working previously? Mine worked until the batteries died. I didn’t renew them because the geofencing features were so rubbish, and Apple’s version was rumoured to be imminent. That was about two years ago :(

I wish I knew! Every time I have needed to trigger one of them within the house (keys or wallet) it has without fail, failed. No noise at all.

Oh, well that’s a bit rubbish! And the batteries definitely aren’t dead?

I wish Apple would hurry up with their in-house version.

Why the hate on Tile? Good for Tile, and good for us as consumers that want choice. I'm sure Apple's Tag offering will be good, but overpriced like everything else. Mr. Cook, tear down this wall(ed garden)!

Tile is not the poster child for tearing down Apple’s walled garden. They have a crappy App, privacy is not even an afterthought, and their business model was built (until recently) on selling users disposable devices.

I am a long time Tile customer, but have very little love for the product or company.

No, but maybe you could attach an AirTag to your Tile.

The hate for some (me included) is due to the data harvesting that Tile conducts and the demand for 'location always on', tiles low selling price appears to be supported by their selling of data, if this wasn't the case they would come out and state it for the record.

I do agree on the general point of opening up completion a bit more.
