Aqara Launches 'G2H' Camera With HomeKit Secure Video

Smart home device company Aqara has today launched the "G2H" home security camera with HomeKit Secure Video support.

HomeKit Secure Video allows the G2H to stream end-to-end encrypted video via Apple's Home app, and the camera will store up to 10 days of footage on iCloud accounts with at least 200GB of space.

Activity detected by the G2H can be analyzed by the HomeKit home hub device to determine if humans, animals, or moving objects are present, and in turn users can receive relevant notifications. The camera also features real-time two-way audio, one-click video messages, 1080p recording, a 140-degree ultra wide-angle lens, IR night vision, and a rotatable magnetic stand.

The G2H can also function as a hub to control all other Aqara sensors and devices. As part of this, the camera creates a unique "Event Timeline," which marks all use of Aqara sensors and devices in the home, so that users can more easily locate a record period on the timeline without fast forwarding through the video footage.

The Aqara G2H is now available on Amazon for $69.99, with a 25% discount until October 15 with the code "AQARAG2H."

I’m knocking on 150 houses a day right now for the election. I see a lot of these devices being deployed across a spectrum of homes. Some of them are really 👻 and make noise when you approach. I think it’s a double-edged sword, because in one way it protects packages and prevents theft...but on the other hand it must really suck to be a child in America with these things being deployed.

You can’t roll people’s homes with toilet paper with reckless abandon like the days when emojis weren't PC. Also if I was a parent & I had a teenager, I would just place one right by the garage to catch their vehicles pulling in and out and know exactly what they are up to.

It has Pros & Cons. I’m for freedom and against “tyranny”. These devices are the definition of the latter, but these serve a good purpose for society as a whole...but you lose a little piece of humanity each time one is set up, IMO

It would be helpful if Apple upped the number of cameras support with HomeKit video. Right now it is only 5 which if you wanted to use this as part of a security system is useless. 15-20 should be supported. Did Apple not think it through?

Also I am not sure if it is still the case, but my spouse and I couldn't both pull up the feed for the baby at once. Allowing 2 people to view a camera would be useful too when it is used as a baby monitor.

(And yes, I left feedback to Apple about it - not that it has done any good yet).

HomeKit supports as many cameras as you have... HomeKit Secure Video only supports 5.

The limitation is on recording cameras, not total cameras.

I can see a justification for more than 5 cameras recording if you own a 20,000 foot mansion, but if you live in an average-sized home then maybe paranoia is getting the better of you.

I wish they made exterior cameras. There's not much out there for HKSV wired cameras. Logitech circle view seems to be the only one.
I do own a lot of aqara products and they do work great.

FYI: Both Eufy and Aqara are China based as far as I know. So if you're concerned about phoning home to China, it probably won't be an upgrade.

And even if you include wireless outdoor camera's there's not much choice regarding HKSV supported cameras.
I don't get why there are not more HKSV wired/wireless outdoor camera's.
The ones that promised it, like Netatmo are taking ages to implement it.
Their new doorbell has HKSV, but man, €300 (Europe) for a 1080p doorbell, really?

Geez, a bit of attitude there. Your mommie didn’t tuck you into bed last night? Not everyone is like you, each person has their own needs and requirements, whether you can understand that or not....

20,000 ft. mansion camera system will have live! security personnel as well as a $500,000 state of art video security that is used in jewel exchanges, art museums and other top security locations.
 
The Eufy Security 2K Indoor cam is $35 right now on Amazon. B08571VZ3Q. Works with HKSV. Doesn't need a hub.

The baby monitor situation is one of the few reasons I couldn’t do HomeKit cameras. I really hope they improve it one of these days so I can dump Nest.

...but I remember I read here in the forum or on Amazon (have unfortunately no link at hand) that EUFY cams need access to the internet because they phone home. Meaning when you block them on your router, they will not longer work in HomeKit / HSV.
I have tested Logitech and Eve and both work fine when their internet-access is blocked. HomePod or iPad set-up as Homekit-Hub acts as a gateway instead. This way you can make sure that there is no side-channel outside of HomeKit/HSV end-to-end encryption. And this is the reason why I personally use HSV.

Do all these HomeKit cameras funnel through a common notification UI/API?
What I mean is: if the camera notices something it sends your phone (and then your watch) a notification. The content of these notifications varies wildly. Some (eg Nest) include snippets of video on both phone and watch. Some have ohone video but not watch video. Some (eg Wyze) highlight WHERE you should look for the motion that they detected, others give you a Where's Waldo experience. Etc etc.

In an ideal world, all HomeKit cameras would funnel through a common notification UI that would
- send video to both phone and watch
- put rectangles on the video around where the motion occurred
- zoom in, on the small watch screen, to the area of interest

So my question is: how close are we to that ideal world?
