Silicon Alley Insider reports that Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has released a new research note looking at NPD's data for Mac and iPod sales for April and May. According to Munster, Apple is continuing to see strong growth of Mac sales ahead of analysts' expectations, with little cannibalization by the iPad seen so far. The iPod, however, is still underperforming relative to Wall Street expectations, although sales seem to have improved since an earlier survey covering only April's data.
Mac retail sales in the U.S. are up 37% year-over-year for the quarter through May, according to NPD Group data analyzed by Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster, who just published the new data in a note.

That's better than the 19% year-over-year growth (3.1 million units) the Street is predicting for the June quarter. So unless Mac sales hit a wall in June, Apple should have some Mac upside in the June quarter, plus all the benefit of the iPad.
The earlier survey covering only April had shown Mac sales up 39% year-over-year, with the new report adding in May data showing only a slight slip in overall growth for the quarter from the earlier data, but still nearly double that currently expected by Wall Street analysts.

The iPod line is a different story, however, as the maturing product line is being overtaken in sales and publicity by the iPhone as strong sales of the iPod touch are only just struggling to offset declines in the traditional iPod segment. NPD's new data shows a decline of about 13% year-over-year in the iPod line, roughly in line with Wall Street expectations of sales of 9-10 million for the quarter and slightly worse than Munster's prediction of a 9% decline. The 13% decline marks an improvement from the April data alone, however, which showed iPod sales down 17% year-over-year. Munster also notes the NPD's data, which tracks only U.S. sales, is less reliable for iPods than Macs due to the higher mix of international sales for iPods.

Good to hear. Let's see some redesigned Macs this year!

It seems a bit logical that the iPod line would slow down in sales.

iPhone and iPad are similar to the iPod Touch and 75% of the market is owned by Apple already, it seems like most people buying iPods nowadays are just upgrading.

It will be an extremely sad day when Apple kills off the original iPod. :(

Please don't Apple. Some of us need that 160 GB of space.

Nice I guess, but its about time we see updates specs on the imac and mac pro...

Happy to say that I contributed to the bump in mac sales as I purchased my wife a MacBook Pro last month. Now...I am waiting for a refreshed iMac for me! Maybe we will see one next Tuesday? I have cash in hand and am ready to buy. Apple - don't disapoint.

I can't believe that the Mac Pro is selling strongly 15+ months after being updated yet still on sale at the same price. EDIT: 16 months!

It's great that Macs are selling well but that may not continue to be the case if Apple continues to rest on their laurels and focus almost exclusively on iToys.

I am hoping so. I would love to get a new iMac with the updated (due this month) i7 chip and a better GPU. Leave the body style the same and keep the price close to the current offering. Based on Apple's recent history (of a Mac update every month for the past three months on the Tuesday that falls closest to the mid month) we are due for a Mac update next Tuesday. I predict it will be the MacAir or the iMac. I am hoping for the iMac. Need to start watching inventory levels in the coming days for a clue.

Time to kill off the classic iPod. There's really no use for it now. I don't see how they sell any of them.

If you want video, buy an iPod Touch.
If you just want a music player, buy a Nano or Shuffle.
If you want all of that plus a phone, iPhone.

Maybe i'm missing something, but what type of person wants a classic iPod?

Based on Apple's update methodology this summer a Mac computer has been updated every month on the Tuesday that falls closest to the middle of the month...

April 13th - MacBook Pro
May 18th - MacBook
June 15th - Mac Mini
July 13th - ????
August 17th - ????
September 14th - ????

My money is on the MacAir in July and the iMac in August. Both of those computers would benefit from being on sale prior to the start of school this fall. The MacPro is surely to get updated after the other two...so I will peg September for the MacPro release.

i stopped by the Apple store at Roosevelt Field Mall yesterday and it was a mad house. the Sony store 50 feet down was almost empty. the mall had decent foot traffic and it seemed like everyone went to the apple store at least once.

and it seems like Wintels had a price hike in the last few months. it's harder to tell with Dell/HP since they customize everything but computers seem more expensive now.

back when i Core first came out it seemed you could get a Core i3 system for $500. few weeks ago while looking for a new work laptop i noticed that anything with a GPU other than Intel HD seemed to be at least $800 or $850. my father in law needed a new laptop last week and anything i3 was at least $550 plus tax online and a bit more in the stores. i ended up buying him a celeron laptop for $299 today.

last month it seemed like the iMac had a big premium over Dell/HP. last year the iMac was actually cheaper than a comparable Dell/HP. so i played with the online customization and it seems like iMac's aren't as premium priced anymore. and there seems to be a lot of c2D/old pentium based systems in the market these days. i thought i Core systems would be cheaper and take over most of the market by now

Maybe i'm missing something, but what type of person wants a classic iPod?

Someone that wants tons of storage space or to cary their music in a lossless format. My 16Gb phone is packed and has a fraction of the number of songs the manufacturer stated it could hold due to the fact that I cary my music in lossless format. For someone like me...16Gb is way too small...one of the reasons I was hoping for a 64Gb iPhone to replace my aging blackberry. I will have to settle for a 32Gb iPhone once supply catches up with demand.

the crazy OCD people who want to carry around 160GB of music around

Someone like me - granted that is a small % of the market. I have most of my music in Lossless or AIFF format and would like something more than the 160GB currently - say a 500GB iPod Classic would be nice. Makes for a wide variety of music on very long flights.

Audiophiles who have to have everything in a lossless format need the space that an iPod Classic provides. Just a 4-minute song in a lossless format is what, around 40 MB?

I think that iPod sales will take off again if Apple redesigns the iPod Touch to match the look of the iPhone 4, and they include some kind of camera.

i had a lot of my music in lossless format and got sick of it taking up too much room. converted it all to AAC and never noticed a difference. and i use Sennheiser headphones with my iPhone

i still have a 40GB classic iPod from 2004 that i haven't used in years. i had so much music on it i would never listen to it. same with my 32GB iphone. it's literally months of music that is impossible to listen to. and i got my hands on close to 100GB of music from someone else a few months ago and needed to make a system to listen to it. i ended up creating a few feeder playlists for all the genres and regular ones. first i'll listen to the feeder lists and then transfer anything i'll like to the regular lists. this way anything i don't want to listen to again doesn't take up space. and even the best bands that have been around for decades have a lot of filler material that most people don't listen to on a daily basis and don't want to carry around

so except for the few OCD people that must carry around a 160GB iPod around, there is no point in doing so for the vast majority of people.

If the iPod Touch gets upgraded to 128 GB this year, I could very much see Apple killing the iPod Classic.

toshiba did start making denser flash memory. not sure if it's going to be ready by the time new ipods ship

Well that's a good prediction Wall Street Journal. Well the iPod did have a good decade run. Longer than anyone could expect of a single line of technology. Ran longer than the iBook and Powerbook lines did it not?

Yeah same here, but the re-encode sort of works for the mobile devices, while I keep the main library in loseless.

Well it makes perfect sens, New iPhone & iPad are associated with apple as a brand and if they succeed in satisfying the users (which they have) it will encourage them to buy more apple products (mac), it's kind of free publicity a perfect on. I think we'll be seeing a lot more great macs in the future. We'll just have to wait and see.
